Following killings of Nepals royal family Annan urges calm

In a statement issued by his spokesman on Friday evening, Mr. Annan said he was “profoundly shocked” by the killing of King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya as well as other members of their family. “He is deeply saddened by this tragedy,” the spokesman said.Extending his heartfelt condolences to the people of Nepal, the Secretary-General called for “calm and stability in this difficult period,” according to the statement.The President of the UN General Assembly, Harri Holkeri of Finland, also expressed his shock at the news, and joined in extending condolences “to the people and Government of Nepal as they cope with this tragedy,” his spokesperson said on Monday. read more
