RCMP officer suspect hospitalized after member involved shooting near Turtleford

A Saskatchewan RCMP officer and a male suspect were both taken to hospital after what RCMP described as a “member involved shooting” near Turtleford.The incident began just after 7:30 a.m. when officers at the RMCP detachment in Loon Lake received reports of a possible impaired driver who was driving at high speeds, Mark Fisher, the commanding officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP, told media at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. Fisher noted that officers who were dispatched to locate the driver failed to do so.The vehicle was spotted again over the following few hours by officers in several different locations, but they were also unable to stop the vehicle.Fisher said officers were successful stopping the vehicle just after 10:30 a.m. outside the town of Mervin, Sask. but as RCMP approached the vehicle, one officer sustained a serious but non-life threatening gunshot wound. Fisher noted that the suspect was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the alleged gunshot.The officers then discharged their firearms, Fisher said.The officer was taken to hospital in Turtleford and the suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital with what Fisher said are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.Story continues belowThis advertisement has not loaded yet,but your article continues below.The extent of the suspect’s injuries are not yet known, Fisher confirmed. The suspect’s name was not released and no charge has been laid.RCMP were then able to confirm that there was no further threat to public safety.“These are incidents that stick in your mind whenever they happen, wherever they happen,” Fisher said. “These incidents have a significant impact on the law enforcement family as a whole and obviously on all our extended families.”Fisher said RCMP have asked the Regina Police Service to conduct an independent external investigation into the circumstances of the incident, which The RCMP Act states is protocol for any incident that involves death or serious injury.An increased police presence was expected to be in place for several hours west of Mervin on the Highway 794 grid. read more
