She said that although the tree is a native in the province of Iloilo, the species also grow in the forests of Jamindan, Capiz. “Tanum Iloilo: Tree Planting with Social Distancing” will have its symbolic launching on June 25 in celebration of Arbor Day. Capiz’s Gov. Esteban Contreras turned over the seedlings to Governor Defensor on June 10. The endemic plant, known scientifically as Aglaia argentea, was named after the province of Iloilo. The tree planting program will be participated by municipalities, barangays, national government agencies, non-government organizations, and the private sector, among others. ILOILO – The provincial government is launching a province-wide tree planting convergence drive with adherence to social distancing protocols. “We are hoping that we can propagate this. We do hope that this will symbolize the commitment of Capiz and Iloilo in making our provinces, and probably the whole Panay Island become adaptive to climate change. We can make Panay become greener and more beautiful,” Contreras said. ILOILO TREE “What’s important is the nutrients it gets from the ground. The soil needs to have compost and organic matter. Although it is rainy season now, we should watch out and if there are some weeks without rain, the seedlings need to be watered,” Primavera said. The massive tree planting program aims to plant 1.5 million trees a day, according to Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. The Iloilo tree can grow up to 30 meters tall and survive up to 100 years with proper care. Its leaves, which form into a rounded crown in a full-grown tree, have a silver underside. “We will implement laws, ordinances, administrative issuances, and resolutions relative to the environment, particularly on tree planting,” the governor said. “We want to show that we can proceed with life even with social distancing. That the programs that we have been implementing, we will continue to implement,” Defensor said. Jurgenne Primavera, chief mangrove scientific advisor of the Zoological Society of London-Philippines, said the Iloilo tree is unique since it is the only tree that was named after a place. A large number of this tree can be found in the mountains of Jamindan town in Capiz. But the trees’ population diminished due to the Ilonggos’ lack of awareness of its importance. For his part, Governor Contreras said Iloilo province is the rightful owner of the Iloilo tree, which has helped Capiz in its One Million Trees in One Day Challenge in 2018. Among those to be planted are the 100 seedlings of Iloilo tree donated by the Capiz provincial government to the province of Iloilo. The tree was called “Iloilo” by a Catholic priest in 1840 as he observed that a lot were growing in the province. She advised the local government units to plant seedlings in an open space to allow its growth. “We will also propagate it here. We will turn it over to the municipalities during the symbolic launching of Tanum Iloilo,” Defensor said. A tree guard should also be put around the seedling to protect it from any animal or human intervention. (LHC, Capitol News, PNA/PN)

NEW YORK — The Brooklyn Nets had an easy time in their first game this season without Deron Williams — until the last few seconds.Mason Plumlee scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and Brooklyn held off a late rally for a 110-105 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Dec. 21.After Mirza Teletovic’s layup with 5:31 remaining gave the Nets a seemingly comfortable 98-83 lead, the Pistons pulled to 106-105 on Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s 3-pointer with 9 seconds left.Joe Johnson, who scored 16 points, followed with two free throws. Caldwell-Pope, who finished with 20 points, then missed on a long 3-pointer and Andre Drummond committed a loose ball foul on the rebound“Sometimes we get to the point where we try and protect the lead instead of just playing basketball,” Johnson said. “We kind of shot ourselves in the foot and let them right back into the game.Kevin Garnett missed the two ensuing free throws. Josh Smith grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled by Sergey Karasev.Smith also missed both free throws, Garnett grabbed another rebound and this time made both for the final score.Jarrett Jack, who replaced the injured Williams, finished with 15 points and contributed 10 assists as the Nets tied a season high with 29 assists.“I thought the brand of basketball we put out there tonight was very, very contagious,” Jack said. “I just thought it was an enjoyable brand of basketball. Obviously, we need to clean up some things at the end.” Williams has a strained right calf.Plumlee shot 9-of-10 from the field and had 12 rebounds.“He’s going to be a great player. You can see his progress,” said Drummond, who finished with 18 points and 20 rebounds. “He played a great game tonight. Brooklyn is utilizing him the right way. He’s going to thrive here.”Bojan Bogdanovic had 14 points, Teletovic finished with 13 and Garnett added 10 for the Nets.Greg Monroe had 16 points, Smith and Jodie Meeks finished with 13, and Jonas Jerebko added 10 for the Pistons.“Our defense is just not giving us a chance to win games,” said coach Stan Van Gundy. “You’re going to give 53 percent, 110 points, 29 free throw attempts, we don’t have a chance. That’s got to improve or we’re not going to have a chance to win.”(JEFFREY BERNSTEIN)TweetPinShare0 Shares
