By Rachel Jones Staff Writer Crimsin owner Tino Khvang stood in the middle of the dusty room, surrounded by tools, shelving and cleaning supplies, while manager Dave Laatz flashed a rainbow of colored lights across a silver wall. It was just a few days before the promised “soft opening” of their new bar and lounge in downtown San Pedro and the pair were hard at work. “I really wanted a place where you can bring your wife, girlfriend ? a couples’ place,” he said. “Also a place where it’s safe and where you can just go enjoy yourself.” He said they have put “a lot of emphasis” on security and hand-picked their hosts. The bar will have a dress code that encourages guests to “dress nice” and avoid such things as caps, baggy pants or shorts, Khvang said. The drink menu will include cocktails, a wine list and eight “high-end” beers on tap. Specialties will include a Crimsin martini, similar to a pomegranate martini, and a Crimsin lager. Khvang said they don’t plan on having a food menu, but can arrange catering for large groups. He also hopes patrons take advantage of the bottle service offered at the bar. Guests can buy liquor at the bar and store it in a safe-depositlike case and keep a key for their next visit. “It’s a really nice, fun thing to do with a group, to have a bottle there,” he said. Despite the nice drink menu and posh atmosphere, Khvang said the prices will not turn people away. “It’s going to be about a dollar more than everybody else,” he said. “It’s not going to be the Hollywood prices. … It will be more similar to Hermosa or Redondo Beach pricing.” Khvang is confident that the bar’s ambiance will make it a great place to hang out, bring a date or have a party. “There’s no other place like this in San Pedro and probably won’t be for a while,” he said. Khvang and Laatz started renovating the space about two months ago, when it was Tommy’s Yacht Club. They had wanted to have a soft opening starting Monday but were on track to open for First Thursday. They plan to hold their grand opening Nov. 16. Crimsin’s interior will include some unique designs, such as an illuminated bar, silver wallpaper, big plush couches and a semiprivate back room, which will be complemented by tunes from the new sound system. In addition to making the bar “opulent,” Khvang wants it to be open to everyone.
